How do we escape the wave of plastic debris that’s slowly engulfing us from all directions? We are all contributing to this mountain of waste, but there are ways to reduce the impact.
Embarking on a journey with hard-to-recycle plastic, Delhi based Manveer aka ‘Plasticvalla’, aims to transform environmental concerns into art. His work is deeply inspired by individuals like Rabindranath Sahu of Odisha (western India), who dedicates his life to cleaning Rushikulya Beach for the nesting of the endangered Olive Ridley Turtles. This dedication underpins his artistic narrative, emphasizing the urgent need for environmental stewardship.
His work over the last few years led to his participation in the AFD-Metis Artist Exchange program in Lomé, Togo, in August 2023, that was a platform for community engagement and environmental activism. Through workshops, he introduced the concept of Habit-Changer-Boxes, promoting sustainable waste management practices among the local communities. This project also highlighted the plight of Africa’s migrating Zebras, a reminder of the habitat loss faced by wildlife globally due to deforestation and urban development.
‘Unity,’ a public installation at DLF Promenade (in collaboration with Desee Art) for Earth Day 2023, embodies his commitment to sustainability. This giant turtle, crafted from MLP wrappers and plywood, symbolizes the collective effort required to mitigate plastic pollution. In Bir, Himachal Pradesh, his installation of the Himalayan Griffon vulture addresses the critical issue of species endangerment due to climate change. Through such installations, working with the community to gather the waste, he strives to inspire change, encouraging people to adopt eco-conscious practices and foster a deeper connection with our planet. The ‘Habit Changer Boxes’ are daily reminders of our consumption!
Manveer’s work has been recognized and featured by various media outlets, thanks to efforts of Team Desee Art, amplifying the message of environmental conservation and sustainable living.
