WE ARE OCEAN_Blaupause Berlin

We have been seeding the WE ARE OCEAN Blaupausen program for Germany together with our curator Dr. Julia Moritz and launched it in March! It is traveling to each of the 16 federal German states until 2027.

The project started with a first workshop series in Berlin, together with the artist Tue Greenfort and students from the Campus Rütli in Neukölln. The highlight of this stop was the student’s intervention at the First German National Ocean Conference.

The Danish artist Tue Greenfort led this first workshop at the Gemeinschaftsschule Campus Rütli in Neukölln. Supported by our scientific partner, the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research and the marine biologist Holger Kühnhold, he explored together with the students the implications of overfishing on our seas and ocean. Getting their hands a bit dirty they experimented with fishprints, using real fish that were selected at the local fish market. The printed T-shirts then served to spread their message regarding a responsible and sustainable approach to fishing.

To start this first part of our series with a highlight, we were very happy to present the results of the workshop at the First German National Ocean Conference in Berlin (Erste Deutsche Meereskonferenz) on the 6th of May. This way the students had the possibility to directly interact with politicians and stakeholders, empowering them to feel their own impact.

They mixed up the conference and engaged with hundreds of experts around the Ocean and the Seas from Germany and other countries gathered for the first time in this context to discuss how German sciences and politics, but also society can contribute to a healthier ocean.

Together with the artist Tue Greenfort and the curator Julia Moritz they stormed the stage shouting their demands for more ocean action to the gathered scientists and politicians: “We don’t want a grey planet, we want a blue planet!”

They also participated lively in the prior fishbowl discussion with Tue, Julia, Ute Wilhelmsen and Anne-Marie Melster, sharing their questions and suggestions on how to go further after the workshops.

We thank the German Ministery of Environment for the invitation to host the project at the conference and our funder Stiftung der Berliner Sparkasse for their trust! And the Pädagogische Werkstatt at Campus Rütli for their organizational support.
