Description of the “WE ARE OCEAN Sapmi.”

“WE ARE OCEAN Sápmi” is a project that brings together Indigenous artists and knowledge bearers from different areas of Sápmi to speak about the need of traditional knowledge in ocean protection and stimulate youth empowerment.

Our partner KKH Royal Institute of Art will host the event at their “House 28” with an overview of the project and the overall UNESCO endorsed WE ARE OCEAN Global Program, the screening of several video extracts, talks by representatives of UNEP (UN Environment Program) from Nairobi, and an open fishbowl discussion with artists, scientists, activists, and students.

We focus on “Leadership Dialogue 1: Reflecting on the urgent need for actions to achieve a healthy planet and prosperity of all” by empowering young people to engage in a social-environmental project and stimulate them for action. Leadership begins with education, the leaders of tomorrow need a fertile ground for establishing a sustainable and responsible mindset. ARTPORT_making waves offers the participating students – through the UNESCO endorsed WE ARE OCEAN Global Program, a UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) project – a space where they can meet UN policymakers, indigenous leaders and representatives, artistic pioneers in the field, as well as academic leaders and activists engaged with environmental protection worldwide. This interdisciplinary look at future leadership in environmental action is a different way for youth empowerment as it integrates diverse fields of our societies and offers a platform for both groups, achieved leaders in their respective fields, and young students and activists, who meet in a creative environment and discuss experiences and needs, but also expectations. The venue is a special place located on the island of Skeppsholmen and part of one of Europe’s most renowned art institutes, the House 28 surrounded by water, an emblematic place to bring people from different cultural, societal, and generational backgrounds together. The afternoon features artistic videos, talks, and an open fishbowl discussion with Anne-Marie Melster (curator), Keith Larson (Arctic researcher, TBC), Björn Larsson (pro-rector KKH), Chilekwa Kangwa (a representative of the indigenous communities of Bembas, Bisas, Lalas and Mambwes of Northern Zambia), Siham Drissi (UNEP Programme Management Officer, TBC), the Swedish leading artist Carl Michael von Hausswolff and others and welcomes the broader audience, including accredited delegates of Stockholm+50 to speak about environmental action from a different perspective.
