Meteorologist, former President of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg, Germany
Monika Breuch-Moritz is a German meteorologist who began her career at the German Weather Service (DWD) in 1977. From 1989 until 2008, she worked in the German Federal Ministry of Transport in various leading positions, with a strong focus on protecting the marine environment and addressing climate change and its societal impacts. During her time at the shipping directorate, she served for 10 years as Head of the Section “Climate and Maritime Environment Protection.”
In 2008, she became President of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg, Germany, a position she held until her retirement in 2018. Throughout her career, she was deeply committed to advancing and enforcing international conventions aimed at reducing pollution and emissions from ships, particularly within the International Maritime Organization (IMO). From 2016 to 2021, she served as one of the IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassadors.
Cleaner oceans, marine environmental protection, and the sustainable use of the oceans remain her core priorities. From 2017 to 2021, she was Vice Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO.
Breuch-Moritz has been a member of various scientific and technical advisory boards in ocean science and marine environmental organizations, as well as in the boards of marine and maritime foundations, Rotary International, and the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA).
