WE ARE OCEAN_Blaupause Bremen

Bremen is an essential stop on the WE ARE OCEAN_Blaupausen tour, for its national significance, and the community’s deep connection with the sea. To make this connection tangible through art and science, the renowned artist Insa Winkler joins us, an artist dedicated to ecological issues for many years. In collaboration with the emerging marine scientist Wiebke Homes (Centre for Tropical Marine Research ZMT Bremen) and other interdisciplinary experts, she is developing an engaging artistic workshop.

The project will be hosted at the school and the ZMT. Students in research class 6.7 of the Bremen-Ost Comprehensive School, a key project partner in Bremen, and the artist will co-create  around the topic of the porpoise (a marine mammal home in the German Baltic Sea)  with the opportunity to act as young ambassadors for blue climate awareness.

WE ARE OCEAN partners with the renowned Übersee-Museum Bremen to host the famous WE ARE OCEAN Fishbowl Discussion, where artists, scientists, program directors, curators, and—most importantly—students, friends, and families come together for an exchange —an open, non-hierarchical, inclusive exploration of challenges & solutions.

What comes to mind when students think about climate change? And how can we protect our ocean, which spans the globe and plays a central role in the Earth’s climate system? What role do porpoises play in this?

Students of the research class 6.7 at Gesamtschule Bremen-Ost will have spent 3 days (June 22 until June 25 2026) exploring these questions together with artist Insa Winkler & marine scientist Wiebke Homes. The interdisciplinary workshop will take place at the Gesamtschule Bremen-Ost and the Centre for Tropical Marine Research in Bremen.

Join us for the closing event at the Übersee-Museum Bremen, where experts from across art, science, and society will answer & discuss the students’ questions in a fishbowl discussion.

Participants: students of the research class 6.7 of Gesamtschule Bremen-Ost, Dr. Insa Winkler (artist), Wiebke Homes (marine scientist) (Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT)), Dr. Julia Moritz (curator of WE ARE OCEAN_Blaupausen), Kai Kaschinski (chairman of the board fair oceans), Dr. Thea Hamm (Nationalparkverwaltung Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer, Wilhelmshaven), Anne-Marie Melster
