WE ARE OCEAN_Nice

WE ARE OCEAN waves joined forces with UNOC3 in Nice this June!

During two events (UNOC3 Green Zone, UNESCO Pavilion Beyond Borders and onboard the German Research Vessel METEOR in the UNOC3 Red Zone, Port Lympia), the students and teachers of the Collège Jules Romains Nice presented their inspiring project results of WE ARE OCEAN_Nice Raconte-moi la Mer. The crew of the METEOR welcomed us warmly, organized a guided tour in French for the students, and the team of Projektträger Jülich, the German agency coordinating all events on board the research vessel at UNOC3 on behalf of the German Government, generously helped us to host an exhibition of the works and an exciting Fishbowl Discussion.

The artist Morgane Ganault from L’atelier Rural de la Roya, and geologist Christian Gorini, co-created together with the students a wonderful comic book which speaks about the ecology of the space in between the river Var and the Mediterranean Sea.

During prior workshops the students explored the rivers of Nice and the Mediterranean Sea. They were working on links and impacts between rivers and the ocean, led by Morgane Ganault and Christian Gorini with whom we organised an excursion to the nearby delta of the river Var next to Nice’s airport. The students were guided by scientific insight and artistic expertise to draw what they saw and understood along the river delta and at the beach.

We learned that story-telling is an important tool to get scientific knowledge to civil society. And that’s what the young people did: Telling ocean and river stories through the comic strips they elaborated.

During the 3rd UN Ocean Conference, the students had the chance to present their work and the comic they created twice: On the 4th of June at the UNESCO Beyond Borders Pavilion in the Green Zone and on the 12th on board of the German research vessel METEOR, a very unique and inspiring experience.

The discussion, in the middle of our small exhibition on the main deck, was opened by Anne-Marie Melster, Morgane Ganault, Christian Gorini and Fabien Dumont from MAMAC, joined by the students who then explained what they had learned and created, clarifying their view of the river and the ocean and their interdependence. We were later joined by experts from the audience such as the deep sea polar biologist Antje Boetius, and Markus Reymann, co-founding director of TBA21, who gave powerful messages to the students and the audience!

A huge thanks goes out to our funder SHORE (SHORE Community, funded by the European Union), Ville de Nice for the co-funding and our partner Musee d’Art Modern Contemporain (MAMAC).
