WE ARE OCEAN_Tanzania

WE ARE OCEAN traveled to Tanzania!

We are grateful for the opportunity to have hosted the WE ARE OCEAN_Tanzania project and workshop at Mwongozo Primary School in September 2025 in Dar Es Salaam as part of the African Blue Food Festival.

Tanzanian artist Arafa Hamadi hosted the workshops and brought two colleagues, creatives and dancers, from the city to assist. We gladly welcomed 40, highly creative, engaged and enthusiastic children between 6 and 8 years, with whom we co-created coral reef-themed artworks, which we already presented partially at the Embassy of The Netherlands in Dar es Salaam during an ABFF event with all the delegates.

While educating on coral reefs, what is at stake, and what needs to be done, we collectively brain-stormed ways to preserve Tanzanian corals.
We worked with natural materials – plywood, natural sponge, collected and recycled materials – to create 40 miniature coral reefs, which will go on to be exhibited at local schools and other places in Tanzania.

While the delegates from the Africa Blue Food Festival planted seaweed and installed beehives on the coast, ARTPORT focused on this fantastic opportunity to encourage, teach, and craft solutions with the young participants – and in turn, learn from them!

And of course a huge thanks to our funder Lighthouse Foundation for making it possible and supporting our vision in creating Ocean Literacy and also bring engaged voices back to Europe from countries where many young people are highly engaged with environmental protection!
