new year-artport

The last days of the year have started and we would like to give you a brief roundup

of the last weeks at ARTPORT_making waves.

2023 was the hottest year since the measurement of earth´s temperature started. Please remember this whenever you take the decision about something which could contribute further to climate change. Because the temperatures, the lack of rain, the accelerating environmental pollution (air, sound, ocean, plastic..) are all caused by human activities. And we all add to it or can be agents of positive change with each gesture.

Let´s work together on making 2024 a better year, a more environmentally friendly year, a more respectful year, a more plant based year, and a happier year.

DESCRIPTION: Based on ARTPORT_making waves ́ endorsed WE ARE OCEAN Global Program contributing to the Ocean Decade – which focuses on the interdisciplinary approach bringing together art, science and informal education to enhance among young people worldwide the understanding of the ocean and all related challenges as well as possible solutions – we propose an open fishbowl discussion and video screening.

🌊 The question to be discussed: “How can contemporary artists together with scientists, educators, and young people co-create something powerful which leads to behaviour change and addresses solutions for a healthy ocean?”

🌊 The discussion will be opened by one of our artistic videos which we produced so far in the framework of WE ARE OCEAN : WE ARE OCEAN Berlin+Brandenburg by Lisa Rave in co-creation with the students from the participating schools.

🌊 We will address the “Challenge 10: Ensure that the multiple values and services of the ocean for human wellbeing, culture, and sustainable development are widely understood, and identify and overcome barriers to behaviour change required for a step change in humanity’s relationship with the ocean.”

The ABC of the Ocean and ARTPORT’s WE ARE OCEAN Program

Dive into Ocean Literacy: From childhood ABC to the vastness of the ocean relearning interconnectedness.

If we go back to our early days at school, what did we first learn? The ABC, exactly. Now that we are grown-ups and literates, some of us – even scientists and intellectuals – should be able to know the ABC of many parts of our lives: the ABC of our body, of our health, of work, love, friendships, but most importantly the ABC of our surrounding nature, the forests, the animal habitat, and of course the ABC of the ocean to understand the fragile network and kinship, the interconnectedness.

We just function on autopilot in most of these areas: We eat as best as we can, we work as efficiently as we are able to, we exercise to keep fit, we treat our family and friends in the most respectful way, we recycle, fly as little as possible, we try to produce as little garbage as possible, we plant trees, we only buy used clothes, we repair our things instead of buying new ones – those are the ideal cases. We do all of this because we learn it somewhere, read about it, listen to conferences, and educate ourselves. So far so good.

But then there is something as huge as the world-spanning ocean and we are getting lost. Ok, we know by now that more than 71% of the world is really ocean and we should actually call our planet “Ocean” rather than “Earth”, but we are land-based beings and prefer to focus on what is happening on land because it is much closer to us and better understandable.

Event with UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development

WE ARE OCEAN Vancouver: Cease Wyss’s ocean botany

IOC-UNESCO invited ARTPORT_making waves to propose a session for the Ocean Decade Laboratories
Laboratory 1: “An Inspiring and Engaging Ocean” Satellite Activities and accepted our “WE ARE OCEAN Vancouver: Cease Wyss’s ocean botany” online event.

About

Cease Wyss’s ocean botany private lesson brings the ocean of British Columbia, Canada, to the curator Anne-Marie Melster, teaching her all about the interconnection of medicinal plants of British Columbia and their impact on ocean health. It will be an introduction to this vast botanical and marine topic and the audience is invited to participate with questions and reports of their experiences. The chosen interactive format is “fishbowl one-on-one” which means that two main characters will lead the discussion and in each chapter one participant from the audience is invited to interact. The format is not only interactive but also participatory and makes the online session more accessible and attractive for the viewer. This event is growing out of “WE ARE OCEAN, Vancouver” which is a commissioned by the Vancouver Biennale. ARTPORT_making waves invited the Canadian artists T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss and Olivier Salvas to work with Vancouver school students from October 2020 until summer 2021. The project is an artistic contribution to the Preparatory Phase of the UN Decade Of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

We Don’t Have Time is a social network for everyone who wants to be a part of the solution to the climate crisis. The power of many enables us to influence businesses, politicians and world leaders. But We Don’t Have Time to wait.

Cause

Global warming threatens our existence. The evidence is there. This is a time of crisis–and it’s a crisis of our own making. We created this situation, and we can set things straight. Together we are the solution. But we don’t have time to wait.

A movement is growing, a movement of people saying: “This can’t go on–we want change.” We want to connect these people. Social media has created new spaces for collaboration and collective action. Herein lies our opportunity. Together, we are stronger than the status quo. Because the status quo is nothing without us. We own this, and we can fix this, together.

We Don’t Have Time is a social media network for everyone who wants to be a part of the solution. If a large enough number of people want change, and if that energy is directed towards those in charge–change will come.

Being a member of We Don’t Have Time is free of charge and lets you create climate reviews as well as interact and follow other members.

Read more or become a member.

Together we are the solution.

Organization

We Don’t Have Time is a movement and a tech startup that leverages the power of social media to hold leaders and companies accountable for climate change.

The founders and backers of We Don’t Have Time are ordinary people with various backgrounds and experiences. Aware, but not experts in this field, our lowest common denominator is that all of us at some point in life “woke up” and started to worry and learn about the Earth’s health.

We each took a decision: “I will no longer be passive and just watch. If I don’t do anything, who will do it for me?” That was the seed for We Don’t Have Time. And it’s our shared belief, motivation and ambition. The evidence is there. This is a time of crisis–and it’s a crisis of our own making. We created this situation, and we can set things straight. Together we are the solution. But we don’t have time to wait.
